SPOTLIGHT ONBOARD: Filipino Seafarer Leads Heroic Rescue, Saves 28 Bangladesh Refugees

January-03-2025

On the night of December 13, 2024, Captain Edwin Auro aboard the Blue Ciment 4 and en route to Syros Island for bunkering, demonstrated exceptional courage and seamanship by leading a daring rescue operation. His actions, and those of his crew, exemplify the unwavering commitment of Filipino seafarers to protecting lives at sea.

Answering the Call of Distress
At 2330LT, the vessel's Officer of the Watch (OOW) received a Distress Relay Broadcast from Olympia Radio via VHF Channel 16, alerting them to a small boat in distress. The message was clear: 28 individuals were in grave danger. Captain Auro, without hesitation, altered course and set out to answer the call for help.

Under Captain Auro's calm and decisive leadership, the crew sprang into action. The OOW, in constant communication with Olympia Radio, relayed vital information while the lookout scanned the horizon. At 0142LT on December 14th, the distressed boat was sighted. Captain Auro, following Olympia Radio's instructions, skillfully maneuvered the Blue Ciment 4 through the darkness, his determination unwavering.

By 0225LT, the distressed boat was alongside the Blue Ciment 4. The crew, working tirelessly and with great care, ensured the safe transfer of all 28 individuals onboard. The refugees, later identified as Bangladeshi nationals, were exhausted and shaken but thankfully unharmed. They were welcomed with compassion and escorted to the ship's Cargo Control Room, where they received blankets, warm food, and hot drinks, a comforting respite from their ordeal.

Captain Auro, ever mindful of his responsibilities, maintained contact with Olympia Radio and the Kalamata Port Authorities, providing updates and seeking guidance. Following their instructions, he expertly navigated the Blue Ciment 4 to Kalamata Anchorage, dropping anchor at the designated position (37-01.0N 022-07.0E) at 0635LT.

Working in close coordination with the Kalamata Port Authorities, Captain Auro ensured the safe and dignified disembarkation of the 28 rescued individuals. At 0800LT, the service boat AG. Nikolaos NK 307 came alongside, and the transfer process began. By 0827LT, all 28 individuals were safely ashore, their journey to safety complete.

A Legacy of Heroism and Professionalism
Captain Auro's actions, and those of his crew, are a testament to the exceptional skills and unwavering dedication of Filipino seafarers. Their swift response, professionalism, and compassion in the face of adversity reflect the highest standards of maritime service. This rescue serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and humanity that define Filipino seafarers, a source of pride for Hartmann Crew Philippines and the entire Filipino maritime community.
