HCP, ISNTC Empower Employees on Maritime Advancements

June-07-2023

On June 3, 2023, Hartmann Crew Philippines (HCP) collaborated with Intership Navigation Training Center (ISNTC) to gather its land-based employees through an Industry Knowledge Enhancement Seminar.

Since the maritime industry is ever-evolving, demanding continuous learning and adaptation strategies from professionals to ensure the highest standards of safety and efficiency always drives the company to proactively organize an industry-focused training seminar.

With the initiative of empowering its employees, the company invited a distinguished figure in the maritime industry and former seafarer of Hartmann Group, Dr. Marvin P. Japitana, who shared the most relevant insights regarding the 4 Pillars of International Maritime Law namely SOLAS, STCW, MARPOL, and MLC.

Thought to yield long-term benefits and advantages to all stakeholders, the seminar aimed at broadening the horizons of participants, fostering collaboration, and enhancing their understanding of the maritime landscape.

With years of experience and expertise in various aspects of the maritime sector, Dr. Japitana brought invaluable insights to the table. His deep understanding of the 4 pillars of International Maritime Law made him an ideal choice to address the information needed when working in the maritime industry. The knowledge and insights gained from him were expected to help members enhance their knowledge and make informed decision with confidence. Indeed, the presence of Dr. Japitana as its guest speaker added immense value to the seminar, providing participants with a unique opportunity to learn from a distinguished expert.

After Dr. Japitana's discussion, Ms. Jerlyn Miguel (Processing Manager) proceeded to talk about the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) now known as the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). Ms. Miguel emphasizes the importance of this role in preventing illegal recruitment and ensuring the well-being of aspiring OFWs. POEA carefully screens and accredits agencies to ensure compliance with ethical standards and labor laws.

Ms. Hannah Orale of Corporate Communications and Family Center then discussed about Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and its significance to seafarers. OWWA is a welfare institution established by the Philippine government to support and protect OFWs, including seafarers, and their families. It offers various services and benefits to improve the lives of seafarers.

Lastly, Dr. Jeff Rex Calambuhay (ISNTC President) talked about the maritime industry, which is essential for global trade. It encompasses activities related to transporting goods, people, and services across oceans, seas, and waterways, connecting nations and driving economic growth. Seafarers, the skilled professionals who operate and manage ships, face challenges such as long periods away from home, demanding work schedules, and potential dangers at sea.

As the employees apply their newfound knowledge and skills, they are poised to excel in their roles, contribute to the company’s growth, and positively impact the broader maritime community.
