#SHEroes: Empowering the Women of Hartmann Crew Philippines

July-19-2024

On May 18, the CRI Penthouse came alive with the dynamic energy of #SHEroes: A Seminar-Workshop and Fellowship Activity, celebrating the International Day of Women in Maritime. Organized by Hartmann Crew Philippines, this event was a powerful testament to the resilience, strength, and boundless potential of the women who support the seafaring community.

Session 1: Mental Health - Taking Care of Your Mental Health for You and Your Family

The seminar kicked off with a deeply resonant session on mental health, led by Gem Lat of ISWAN. Lat's talk underscored the critical importance of mental well-being, particularly for women who often juggle multiple roles at home and within their communities. She provided practical strategies for managing stress and fostering a supportive environment for mental health. The session was an eye-opener, emphasizing that mental health is not just an individual concern but a family affair. Lat's insightful discourse encouraged women to prioritize self-care and seek support when needed, creating a ripple effect of positivity within their families.

Session 2: OWWA Services

The second session was a comprehensive health talk, focusing the services provided by Anna Estrada of Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). This segment covered vital topics ensuring that the participants were well-informed about the resources available to them. The discussion on OWWA services, including Tulong Puso and the OFW Family Circle, highlighted the various support systems in place for overseas workers and their families.

Session 3: A Talk on Family Matters

Family is at the heart of every community, and the third session brought this to the forefront. Mrs. Wendell Pangilinan (wife of CO Denver Pangilinan) and Mrs. Angelie Glorian (wife of C/E Edzen Glorian) delivered heartfelt talks on building a strong family culture and the dual roles of parenting. Mrs. Pangilinan's insights on fostering family values and traditions resonated deeply, while Mrs. Glorian shared her personal journey of balancing the roles of both mother and father. Their stories were not just inspirational but also provided practical advice on nurturing a supportive and loving family environment, regardless of the challenges faced.

Session 4: Women Power - Inspiring Stories of Women

The final session was a celebration of women's power, featuring inspiring stories from remarkable women. Mrs. Michelle Quimson (wife of C/E Reynaldo Quimson) shared her journey beyond beauty, explaining how she built her beauty business from the ground up. Her story was a testament to perseverance and the pursuit of passion. Mrs. Ayessa Sta Maria (wife of 2/O Bayani Sta. Maria Jr.), who defied norms by working in the traditionally male-dominated field of fixing and designing jeeps, captivated the audience with her boldness and innovation. Mrs. Sharise Camille Borromeo (wife of 2/O Nino Borromeo)  showcased her creative journey from hobby to a successful small business, highlighting the endless possibilities of turning creativity into productivity.

#SHEroes was a celebration of the indomitable spirit of women. It highlighted their critical role in the maritime industry and beyond even as seafarers’ wives, fostering a sense of community and solidarity among the participants. The event served as a reminder that with support, education, and inspiration, women can overcome any obstacle and achieve great heights. The stories shared, the knowledge imparted, and the connections made at #SHEroes will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, empowering the women of Hartmann Crew Philippines to continue being the strong, inspiring forces that they are.
