Seafarer by Profession, Artist by Heart
It must be the dream of every photography-enthusiast to go places —travel the world and capture the world’s fascinating scenes with their lenses. But reality hits hard when travel costs come into light. If only travelling was free, or if one’s job included travel like second officer Joen Masiado—a seafarer.
For over a decade now of navigating the seas, Joen has traveled to many places. He has always made sure a good view doesn’t pass without him seizing the scene with his good old DSLR camera or his reliable smartphone.
“Sayang kasi yong moment na nandyan ka na tapos wala kang ebidensya na napunta ka. Sa akin, sinusulit ko talaga,” said Joen.
His love for photography started in 2004, back when he was still a cadet. His favorite subjects are nature, wildlife, street photography and of course, travel.

Although he didn’t take any formal photography training, Joen managed to improve his skills by watching tutorial videos online and constantly shooting.
His photos are available on his social media accounts —Facebook and Instagram. But, his best picks can be found on his IG account where he over a thousand followers and counting. https://www.instagram.com/joenstravel/
Among the places he’s been, Joen shared that his favorite is Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic where he was completely captivated by the place.
“Kahit sa’n ka kasi tumingin ang ganda talaga,” he explains.
When asked what other place he would like to visit, this seafarer turned photographer mentioned Paris, France. “Sino ba naman may ayaw don ‘di ba? Gusto ko kasing makunan ‘yong Eiffel Tower."
