READY, SET, GET HIRED: How to apply for a job the right way

April-05-2019

A lot of aspiring seafarers (and job applicants in general) start their application off on the wrong foot – from unprofessional acts to ineffective resumes. And now that searching and applying for a job can be done online, job application etiquettes seem to be forgotten by applicants.

To help you grab that dream job and to increase your chances of being hired, here are the common mistakes you should not commit:

1. RESUME: GIVING FALSE AND INACCURATE INFORMATION

  • Lying, especially about your credentials is a big no-no! Recruiters have a way to validate the information you declare so make sure that your resume has complete and accurate data.
  • If applying for different positions and companies, customize your resume for each. You might be perceived lazy by using generic one. Make sure to look out for typos as well!
    • What to do: Applying for a job like is selling yourself and a resume is your advertisement. Straight to the point! Get the recruiters’ attention with a specific, complete and concise resume.
    • Tip: Including a list of your valid certificates, trainings, and sea experience will also make you look more credible.

2. SENDING INFORMAL AND UNPROFESSIONAL E-MAILS

  • You are probably eyeing at different companies, but do not put all their addresses in one email…they can all see it.
    • What to do: Send your application to companies individually.
  • Do not leave the body and subject blank! The subject must be short and straightforward. For the body, simple introduction or message will do.
    • Tip: Keep your e-mail brief and do not forget to attach your resume, and necessary documents.

3. COMMENTING AND POSTING YOUR INFORMATION ONLINE

  • Putting your personal info in the comments section makes you look unprofessional and vulnerable to illegal recruiters and identity theft. Chances are, your comments will be ignored and your info will be left online. In HCP, we hide comments with personal data, so even our recruitment team can’t see it!
    • What to do: Recruiters who post ads online will usually direct you to their official website where you can view the vacancies and apply online. Follow those instructions! You may also opt to visit the company and be a walk-in applicant if they allow it.

4. BEING UNPREPARED

  • To get the job, show the employer how qualified and deserving you are for the post. Aside from your credentials and experience, your character, attitude and behavior reflect who you are as a person.
    • What to do: Just the basics, always come early (on time is late) to an appointment or interview, dress appropriately, be courteous and respectful to everyone, and be yourself. Be confident and study beforehand, if needed.

A FEW MORE NOTES!

  • “What happens if I can’t make it during your interview?”
    • Sometimes, unexpected things come and you may need to reschedule or cancel. An interviewer’s time is valuable so if you can’t make it, inform them immediately and propose a new time, if you can re-schedule. You can say something like, “Sorry I can’t make it on the interview due to [reason]. I am definitely available on [date] or we can discuss another date that works for you.”

  • “As a seafarer, do I need a backer?”
    • Absolutely not. Anyone is free to apply based solely on their merits. smiley

  • “How do I follow up on my application with HCP?”
    • You can get in touch with our recruitment team directly by calling (02) 404-2780 (loc. 165).
