The Women of HCP
This year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) puts female seafarers in the spotlight in celebration of the Day of the Seafarer with the theme, “I Am Onboard with Gender Equality”. Although seafaring has always been looked at as a profession only for men, the women of HCP prove otherwise.
2/O Hannah Escosura
Started as a cadet in 2008, 2/O Escosura fought against the waves and is now a Second Officer. Seafaring was not a solid vision for her but she ended up taking an entrance exam for a maritime course and the rest followed through.
“I honestly feel proud to be a woman in maritime. We are not typical in this field, and there is a distinct surprise, admiration, and curiosity from people you meet.” -2/O Escosura
Seafaring was not an easy journey for her. Like most women in other fields, discrimination is still the biggest hurdle. 2/O Escosura voices out, “Sadly, discrimination was and is still a struggle. Seafaring is a man's world, and men still struggle to welcome women as their colleague, even more as a superior onboard. Although, I think, the younger generations a.k.a "millennials" have less machismo syndrome. But the experienced generations are great mentors once you learn to bring down the wall.”
2/O Escosura proves that women seafarers can also thrive in maritime. She hopes that imparting her knowledge to aspiring seafarers and colleagues will somehow change their perception and be onboard with gender equality in seafaring. “Being a mentor to these boys, I hope I have given them a view that women could be competent seafarers and women could command a ship too. Women could be at par with men, sometimes even better,” she adds.
Her successful career proves that women can also do a man’s job, conquer the rough seas, and even command a ship. Her advice for aspiring female seafarers: “To those girls who wish to join the lion's den, prepare for battle. Being prepared is always the key. Know what you're getting into, be fully equipped with knowledge, skills and right attitude, and lots and lots and lots of patience and understanding. Do your job and be one of the boys as well - and leave your skirts and stilettos at home.”
Land-based HCP Staff
Women in maritime does not only pertain to seafarers onboard, but our land-based superwomen as well. Did you know that 67% of HCP office staff are women? From the executive department to rank and file staff, women are present!
We believe that both genders contribute to success in maritime and together, HCP is onboard with gender equality. To all seafarers, regardless of gender, happy seafarer’s day!
