HCP Jumpstarts Agribusiness Seminars in Aklan, Iloilo

June-04-2018

Hartmann Crew Philippines (HCP) furthers its efforts to facilitate livelihood seminars to its crew and families.

Together with Maritime MultiPurpose Cooperative, HCP teamed up with the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) RTC VI to offer a one-day learning session on agribusiness.

The seminar was held for two batches. The first was held on May 31, 2018 at ATI-RTC IV Training Hall in Aklan while the second batch was trained on June 2 at the Sol y Mar Family Beach Resort in Iloilo.

Dubbed as, “#BalikBukid: Who says farming can’t make a living?”, over 50 participants came to learn the basic principles of organic farming and farming technologies.

Connie Carillo, Farmer Owner and Learning Site Cooperator served as the resource person in Aklan while Jonifer Frades, Department of Agriculture’s Focal Person for High Value Crops shared for Iloilo.

Aside from the lecture, hands-on workshops on the preparation of soil media for nursery operation and reusing plastic bottles as plant containers were taught.

Other topics discussed were marketing strategies to introduce to the participants the opportunities in agriculture. Karen Laurico from Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division of DA-Regional Field Office No. 6 served as the speaker.

Meanwhile to further inspire the attendees, “Master-Farmer” Primitivo Lanario came and shared his farming hobby and its benefits to Aklan participants. (Read our feature story to Capt. Lanario)

On the other hand, a farm tour was organized for Iloilo lead by Hector Zaico, owner of the beach resort who happened to own an eco-farm nearby too.

Due to the positive feedback on the seminar, HCP hopes to mount more agricultural seminars for its seafarers and families in the future.

“Our objective here is that they must be able to realize that there are opportunities in agribusiness in their respective provinces and so they must tap the potential of whatever land they have or land they may want to own,” said Nenelita Gomez, Vice President of HCP.
