10 Tipid Tips to Kick Off 2017
The spirit of New Year commonly brings a vibe of new beginnings. It’s the time when people are motivated to make the next 365 days better, particularly on properly managing their finances.
Hartmann Crew Philippines picked 10 tipid tricks from Smart Parenting magazine along with tips from some of our crew and their wives to help you achieve your financial goals this year.
1. Consider communication promo bundles
Which do you prefer: Call and Text or Mobile Internet?
-
Both local telcos—SMART and Globe—offer special seafarer sims that are aimed at more affordable rates for overseas calls and texts. Regular sims also have special unli and all-net bundles so make sure you’re up to date on their latest offerings in order to save on costs.
-
At port, try purchasing a local sim with Internet capabilities that match your budget. According to some HCP seafarers, there are countries that offer Internet-ready sims with unlimited net for at least a month. You can use the sim again when you return to the same port, provided you’re still enrolled to unlimited Internet bundle.
2. As much as possible, withdraw from your own bank’s ATM
You may have gotten used to resorting to any ATM machine available when withdrawing, but that deducts P10 from you every time! This can add up in the long run and become a big amount.
3. Pay your credit card bills in full and on time
Always pay your credit card bills in full and on time to avoid incurring interest and penalty rates. Be a responsible credit card holder.
4. Buy generic medicine brands
Seafarers need to maintain a clean bill of health both onboard and at home in order to continue sailing. Did you know that you could save as much as 85% by switching to generic medicines?
This is why the Maritime Multi Purpose Cooperative (MMPC) tapped Generika drugstore for Generika MedPadala. It is a reloadable electronic gift check service assuring you that funds for medicines don’t go elsewhere.

5. Avoid the red tag craze a.k.a S-A-L-E
Remember, a sale is best when you buy an item you really need. It is never "sulit" if you buy an item just because it’s on sale and without any use to you. This boils down to clearly identifying your needs versus wants.
6. Be a wise grocer
Bring a list of what you need— and stick to it. It will save time and will also keep you from buying unnecessary items. It’s also advisable to buy in bulk. It will come out cheaper compared to buying smaller amounts repeatedly.
7. Save electric consumption
There are multiple ways to save your monthly energy consumption: (1) unplug appliances that are not in use, (2) keep the filters of the air conditioners clean, (3) opt for frost-free refrigerators which consume less electricity than conventional ones and (4) use energy-efficient light bulbs.
8. Do the right laundry
Use the right amount of detergent with your washing machine. Too much will require additional rinsing cycles, which is a waste of time, water, and electricity. It is also best to air dry your clothes rather than to spin-dry them to save on energy consumption.
9. Do not waste food
Don’t throw away leftovers that can still be eaten. Try recreating them into other dishes. Use your creativity or browse the internet for recipes.
10. Buy food in season
A high supply of goods leads to cheaper prices. Try opting for suha and chico in January or watermelons in April. Food in season will always be more affordable than those that have yet to be harvested.
