A Much Needed Break, Thoughts on Shore Leave

It might be one of the most exciting periods every seafarer looks forward to. After being cooped up in the vessel for so long, it is finally their time to be on land.

Seafarers avail of shore leave for the following reasons but not limited to:

1.Talk to their family at home as communication on board is limited.

2.Buy personal things.

3.Visit or meet friends and/or family residing in that area.

4.Go touring and sight-seeing.

Typically, seafarers spend their shore leave to go places. For first timers who do not know where to go, they might take a paid guide or a friend/relative from the area.

Before availing shore leave seafarers should think of the following:

1.Do I have duty upon return?

2.How much time do I need to go to the place I want to visit?

3.How safe is the area?

4.What am I going to do? (Itinerary)

Enjoying local attractions takes time and is best done during Sundays by those who have no watch keeping duties. If there are work responsibilities, make sure these aren’t compromised by a shore leave.

Availing shore leave may spend some if not ALL of the rest periods. With a shore leave sandwiched between two duty shifts as seen below, the seafarer risks tiring himself out.

8am -12noon – duty

1pm -7pm – shore leave

8pm-midnight – duty

Asking another seafarer to cover one’s shore duty also comes at a risk. The seafarer still has to pay the number of hours he owes to his colleague.

Shore leave can serve as a seafarer’s much needed break but one should always be considerate about it. Weigh the pros and cons and be aware of the duties and responsibilities so that you can fully enjoy your break without compromising your work and well being.
